@x|Smile|x: AVG has a "Game mode" option. But I don't really know what it does, I assume it attempts to make it more pleasant for gamers to play games though, lol. You'd need to tick that box, so it will keep you at least safer while playing games. It will block/ignore malformed/malware packets during play. You can find this in the firewall settings. Hope I helped.

Also if you have a anti-virus programme running you have to expect a bit higher latency in games, so you'd better get used to it. Consider it a confirmation of your PC's safety.

Actually the more programmes you got running the more latency you'll have, well at least that's what I heard.

well, the "Game Mode" does not interrupt you while playing - it's just choosing the first option (which is often remove) and does that in the background. So no message pops up, you can still play normal.

How many of you guys actually know what processes usually run on your PC?

You can usually Google most of the processes that are in your Task Manager anyway.

I know that my processes are fine (I'm only running as I post this message) as it shows up the usual stuff, my antivirus, web browser I'm using and explorer.exe, etc.

If you do consider anything to be suspicious you may as well do a Google search anyway as you can usually find a result on what might or might not be a virus.

I always check files and do virus scans whenever possible just in case I find anything unusual or suspicious. I remember when I thought I had a virus when I got an Apple Ipod (there was a file that came with it called Bonjour) I truly thought it was some sort of french virus until I searched up on it.

I'd just hold the combo keys CTRL + SHIFT + ESC (in Windows 7) for that, and yea I see all kinds of processes, scary as I'm not used to Windows 7 yet, sometimes I see double explorer.exe and I have absolutely no clue, perhaps some bugs that came with the system. It normally is just one? I find that strange. It's the file explorer but apparently it also acts as the explorer shell sort of, so I know what I talk about. All the other processes just seem boring to me, as I've never gotten the time to realise what they are yet but when I see something strange in the process list I simply terminate it. For now my PC is safe though.

Also, don't rely on MS alone to give you the tools you need already installed in the OS. Some of their best stuff is kept in the sides for the sake of smaller distros.

There's:
XP Power Tools
Some good tools and some crap. This is the stuff MS couldn't fit on the XP installation disk.
I highly recommend:
TweakUI
OpenCommandWindowHere

Sysinternals (now part of MS Technet)
This team of developers make some real low level, high detail computer diagnostics software and were so good, MS bought them out...
I highly recommend:
ProcessExplorer
TCPView
AutoRuns
RootkitRevealer

There are many other really cool independant developers, but be careful, some tools are literally so powerful in what they can do/change that AV software can flag them as a virus because they contain code that allows the user to do something powerful that they usually couldn't.

Well, after this shit I got Microsoft Security Essentials.

Erm when did you install that Microsoft security essentials ?
i got the same thing long ago. Check you're process if you have 'hotfix.exe' Sometime when browsing some infected site you'll get fake prompts from the site scanning you're pc and finding a virus. It'll then tell you that you need to get new virus signatures to remove the viruses or to download the anti-virus. If you have an anti-virus installed you'll get fooled and think it's your's ( unless your''res has a special gui - or NOD32 ;P). Then you'll download it ( if you where dumb and ell for it like i did :/) you wont be able to access nearly anything on your PC : Why? :
It stopped the 'explorer.exe' process, that's process/program that shows the GUI from which you control nearly everything o you're PC. Open task manager with CTRL+SHIFT+ESC then click run and enter explorer.exe . Then stop the process tree of 'hotfix.exe' . After that download malware bytes anti malware ( just the trial) and run a quick search. It'll show that you are infected with hotfix Trojan and show a few registry keys, tell it to delete all of those. Restart you'r PC, check for suspicious process then you're done ( and get a good AV :P)

That's for you and for whoever got that virus.

How did i find all of this ?Task-manager because i saw hotfix.exe then Google for telling me what's hotfix.exe and finding a solution on a forum.

Well, sorry for the bad grammar and text format. i typed this very fast.

If you were smart you wouldn't have put in tha background:
"To you friends, your family, and children"
Fake -.-'

Btw: I'm 14, My spelling is bad, but I try to fix that from others aswell.
